Travel on a Budget

Writer: Sherli GarciaSherli Garcia

For many people, finding great deals and planning a vacation is more of a burden than an exciting experience. So, I want to give you all a few tips and tricks that I’ve learned over the years.

The first mistake people usually make is thinking about the when before the where. I have found that whenever I book a trip around specific dates, it is 9/10 more expensive than when I book around locations.

What do I mean by this?

Think about where you want to go BEFORE thinking about when you want to go there. People usually book vacations around long weekends and holidays which is a sure way to spend way more than you have to.

Google Flights allows you to see when is the cheapest time to fly somewhere

I use Google flights to look up a destination first THEN I see when is the cheapest time to fly there. For example, I really wanted to visit Dubai a few years ago but I didn’t want to spend over $1,000 on a flight. So I searched Dubai on Google flights and saw that I could get a roundtrip flight for around $800 in September! What a steal, right? Hell yea, but I didn’t buy the flight just yet. Google lets you track flights to see when prices go up or down.

Turn on the price tracker to get email notifications!

I put a tracker on the flight knowing that there is a very good chance that the prices will go down. A few days later, I got an email notifying me that the flight went down to around $600 ROUNDTRIP. I immediately purchased the flights without hesitation and then came the search for a place to stay.

I typically don’t buy bundled packages like the ones offered on Expedia or Orbitz because I always seem to find a deal on my own that is significantly less than what they are listing (trust me I always compare because I love to be right #virgo).

So in order to search for places to stay, I look on AirBnB, Trivago, and booking.com. More often than not, I find a really amazing AirBnB that is inexpensive and beautiful. There aren’t any tricks for finding great rates. It’s just a matter of patience and a lot of digging!

The AirBnB I booked in Cuba for a 4 night trip. $240 pp in TOTAL

The last trick is traveling light! I know this is nearly impossible almost every time but you do save a ton on baggage fees by just bringing what you NEED. Many airlines even have cheaper tickets for people who are traveling with little to no luggage at all!

I love sharing ways to save money with you all but I also love learning from you as well! Have some tips and tricks of your own? Share them below and spread the love :)
